By second semester we have become such good readers that many of the first graders enjoyed reading to their classsmates during milk break. The following are some of pictures of those good readers

Each week in Reading our selections center around an Essential Question. This week our question asked How do community members help one another? We read about characters who helped each other in many different ways. On Friday we decided to help the eldest members of our community. We made these cute little turkeys to decorate their Thanksgiving tables. They will be delivered to the nursing home in Toulon in time for Thanksgiving dinner! It feels good to help others.
On Friday, November 14 Mrs. Bowles visited our classroom to teach us about turkeys. She read us a non fiction book and we learned many new vocabulary terms about turkeys. Then, we all got to make a turkey. It was lots of fun! Thanks, Mrs. Bowles!
A huge Thank You to our Room Moms, Stacy Unhold, Marjorie Daum and Teresa Wilkins for the awesome Halloween Party they threw for our lucky class! The children had a great time playing games and hamming it up for the camera. It is fun to see them cutting loose and enjoying a special day at school. Thanks again ladies. We loved it! Today we learned about contractions. Contractions are two words that have been pushed together to make one word. We imagined that the two words that make up the contraction had been in an unfortunate accident. They smashed together with so much force that a poor vowel popped out. Luckily, we had 14 capable surgeons on hand to remove the injured vowel with their scalpels (scissors) and bandage the new word back together with a band aid. In memory of the poor vowel, we placed an apostrophe. The new word may look different, but it still means the same thing as it originally did. I wish you could have seen the concentration of the faces of the "surgeons" as they carefully worked on their "patients". As soon as the "patients" have rested, we will be using them in sentences. Then they will come home to your houses to recover! Take a look at some of the serious work going on in our "operating rooms!"
We have been working hard on our beginning writing unit. After all that hard work, it was time to celebrate. Mrs. Gilles' class joined us to share their good writing with us. We then sang a few cheers and toasted one another with Fruit Punch. 2, 4, 6, 8 Our Stories Really Great! Now we are all ready to go back to work on our next unit of writing. 1,2,3,4, we can't wait to write some more!
After spending a few weeks learning about solids, liquids and gases, we were ready to make our own gas. Students combined a liquid (vinegar) and a a powder (baking soda) to make a gas! We had evidence that a gas spreads out as far as it can and takes up all the space possible when the baking soda hit the vinegar and our balloons blew right up! The little scientists loved it! They were a tiny bit surprised at how quickly the balloons inflated. One balloon even popped because the gas pushed a little too hard on the inside of the balloon. It was a successful learning experience!
This week we learned a little bit about the Constitution in honor of Constitution Day. After learning about the framers of America's Constitution, we made one for our class using our Classroom promise. Then we "framed" it! (first grade style)
